By the Numbers: Upsets Headline Session I of the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships

Photo by Sam Janicki / @SJanickiPhoto After the first session of the 2022 Division I Wrestling Championships, the prevailing theme is that seeds are irrelevant, and "upset" victories were reasonably commonplace inside Little Caesars Arena Thursday afternoon in Detroit.  Based on bracket seeding, there were 25 "upsets" during the first round, which had 170 total bouts. With that, approximately 15% of first-round matchups were seen as "upsets," according to seeding.  All 10 weight classes had at least one "upset." The 174-pound bracket had the most (5), followed by 125 pounds (4). Additionally, of all 25 upsets, 14 of them (56%) saw a wrestler seeded #20 or higher record a win. Purdue's Matt Ramos (133) and Northwestern's Frankie Tal Shahar (141), both seeded #26, were the highest seeds to secure an upset win, excluding the pigtail round. Conversely, Illinois' Lucas Byrd (133), Ohio State's Ethan Smith (174), and South Dakota's Clay Carlson (141), all #7 seeds, were the highest seeds to suffer a loss in their first match. Remarkably, 15 former All-Americans fell in their first bout of the 2022 NCAAs.   https://twitter.com/NUWrestle/status/1504509204031328258 https://twitter.com/NCAAWrestling/status/1504502773693521922 Chick here for official brackets and team scores
