COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – 16 Americans will travel to Krasnoyarsk, Russia, to compete at the 2022 Ivan Yariguin Grand Prix, one of the toughest tournaments in the world. The U.S. delegation is made up of 12 men’s freestylers and four women’s freestyle athletes. Competition is set for Jan. 27-30.
Highlighting the U.S. roster are Olympic champions Helen Maroulis (WFS 57 kg) and Kyle Snyder (MFS 97 kg), who both won their Olympic golds in 2016. Last summer, Maroulis became the first woman from the U.S. to win two Olympic wrestling medals, adding a bronze in Tokyo. Snyder extended his legacy with a silver-medal performance at the 2020 Olympics. Both Maroulis and Snyder also competed at the 2021 World Championships months later with Maroulis earning her third World gold, while Snyder collected a silver medal.
Thomas Gilman (MFS 57 kg) joins the pair as another Olympic medalist to head to Russia. He won bronze at 57 kg in Tokyo and improved on that performance, winning a gold medal at the Worlds in Oslo, Norway, in October.
Past World medalists James Green (MFS 70 kg) and Forrest Molinari (WFS 65 kg) are expected to compete along with two-time World Team member Zain Retherford (MFS 70 kg). Green holds two World medals, including a silver from 2017 and a bronze from 2015. Molinari earned her first World medal in Oslo, a bronze.
There are several age-group World medalists in the mix for the U.S., including Cadet World champion and Junior & U23 silver medalist Macey Kilty (WFS 62 kg), 2017 U23 World bronze medalist Joey McKenna (MFS 65 kg), 2013 Junior World silver medalist Alex Dieringer (MFS 79 kg), 2017 Junior World silver medalist Zahid Valencia (MFS 86 kg) and 2017 U23 World bronze medalist Ty Walz (MFS 125 kg).
Others representing the Red, White and Blue in Russia are Emma Bruntil (WFS 65 kg), Alec Pantaleo (MFS 70 kg), Jason Nolf (MFS 74 kg), Josh Shields (MFS 74 kg) and Derek White (MFS 125 kg).
