As session two at the U23 World Championships concluded from Belgrade, Serbia, fans of Team USA were transfixed on the 55kg weight class. Utah Valley’s Taylor LaMont (55kg) took on Iran’s Poya Dad Marz in the semifinals after LaMont recorded a pair of wins earlier today during session one.

Unfortunately, LaMont was unable to punch his ticket to tomorrow’s gold-medal matchup. LaMont fell 5-1 to his Iranian opponent, who happens to be a two-time Junior World medalist. LaMont gave up a passivity point and was turned twice from the bottom. The American added a passivity point of his own, but that was all he could muster.

LaMont will compete for a bronze medal tomorrow morning.

Elsewhere, teammates David Stepanian (63kg) and Spencer Woods (87kg), both of whom lost during session one, anxiously awaited semifinal results to see if they would be pulled back into the repechage tomorrow during session three.

Unfortunately, neither match went the way Stepanian and Woods needed. Both were eliminated from the tournament. Also, Britton Holmes (77kg) and Brandon Metz (130kg) were eliminated from their respective tournaments earlier today during session one.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, LaMont will go for a bronze medal. At the same time, Dylan Gregerson (60kg), Alston Nutter (67kg), Nate Moore (72kg), Tommy Brackett (82kg), and Nicholas Boykin (97kg) begin their Greco tournaments during session three.
