We’ve made it to day eight (Session 15) inside Jordal Amfi in Oslo, Norway, early Saturday morning. With that, the last three weights classes in the Greco-Roman tournament took to the mats. All that remains at the Senior World Championships are the last two days of the Greco-Roman completion today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday).
In Session 15, three Americans were in action during the early morning action. Sam Jones (63kg), Peyton Omania (67kg), and Alan Vera (87kg) started their brackets.
G'Angelo Hancock (97kg) will wrestle for a bronze medal later today in Session 16.
Team USA was 0-3, with two shutout losses during the Session 15. Only Alan Vera still has an opportunity to make the repechage.
HERE’S HOW EACH MATCH WAS DECIDED
For the Red White and Blue, Session 15 was about as rough as it gets. Less than 45 minutes into the session, Sam Jones, Peyton Omania, and Alan Vera lost their opening-round bouts and were left to hope for re-entry into the tournament via repechage tomorrow.
Jones got things started for Team USA at 63kg against Deniz Meneksea of Germany. Jones took the initial lead on a passivity point. With his German opponent then put down in par terre, Jones landed a big throw and was awarded two more points.
In the second, Jones was hit for passivity, sending him into par terre on defense. Unfortunately, Menekse was able to turn Jones with a headlock and secure the fall with 1:48 left in period two.
Menekse lost 9-0 in his next match, eliminating Jones from the tournament.
Next, at 67kg, Michigan State’s Peyton Omania had Hasrat Jafarov of Azerbaijan in the opener. After Jafarov got a passivity point mid way through the first, he proceeded to end the match in the following sequence.
Jafarov lifted and turned Omania for two, then turned the American for two more to take a 5-0 lead.
Then, surprisingly, the USA challenged the call on the mat because Azerbaijan was given four points on each turn rather than just two. Omania lost the challenge as well as the match, 10-0.
In the quarterfinals, Jafarov lost 9-0 to 2020 Olympic champion Mohammadreza Geraei of Iran. Thus, Omania is no longer eligible for repechage.
Alan Vera was last to take the mat for the Americans, but the result was the same. Vera fell, 8-0 in a first-period technical fall to Urpal-Ali Bisultanov (Denmark).
Again, an initial passivity call had Vera tailing 1-0 and sent him underneath in par terre. Ultimately, a gut-wrench turn for Bisultanov made it 3-0. Vera appeared to block a lift attempt but Denmark was given three points and Vera was handed a caution. With the lead extended to 6-0, a final turn sealed the deal. Bisultanov got an 8-0 technical superiority with 0:50 left in period one.
Bisultanov won by a 3-1 decision in the Round of 16 over Iran. In the quarterfinals he added a fall over Armenia to advance. A win for Bisultanov in the semifinals against No. 1 Serbia will place Vera into the repechage bracket.
