Photo by Justin Hoch.  On Thursday, day six (Session 12) inside Jordal Amfi Arena in Oslo, Norway, the Team USA women's freestylers brought their tournament to a close. The United States ended on a high note, earning a World gold medal (Helen Maroulis at 57kg) and a World bronze medal (Tamyra Mensah-Stock at 68kg). With that, the U.S. women's squad brought home seven medals, including two gold (Adeline Gray and Maroulis), two silver (Sarah Hildebrandt and Kayla Miracle), and three bronze World medals (Jenna Burkert, Forrest Molinari, and Mensah-Stock). Team USA finished second in the unofficial team race (147 points) behind powerhouse Japan (196 points). Mongolia (78 points) and Ukraine (73 points) round out the top four finishers in the team race.

Inside the Medal-Round Bouts

At 59kg, India's Ashuna, a 2020 Olympian and 2021 Senior Asian Championships gold medalist, couldn't have asked for a better start to her match with Maroulis.  Ashuna took a 1-0 lead into the break over the 2016 Rio Olympic gold medalist, but that lead was short-lived. With two minutes remaining, the two-time Olympic medalist and now three-time Senior World gold medalist, Maroulis, hit a spin-by and ran the bar for a pin at the edge to win World gold, the third of her career and first since 2017.  https://twitter.com/TeamUSA/status/1446154423239991298 At 59kg, Mongolia's Shoovdor Baatarjava, a 2021 Senior Asian Championships silver medalist, thwarted Maya Nelson's quest for World bronze, beating a visibly injured Nelson, 4-3..  Nelson took a 3-0 over her Mongolian foe into the break (a takedown and step-out point). With 2:26 remaining, though, Nelson went down with an apparent injury to her left shoulder.  Hampered by the injury, Nelson gave up two takedowns at the edge of the mat and trailed 4-3 with a minute remaining.  Still, a final scrabble in the last 10 seconds looked promising for Nelson, but she couldn't secure the winning takedown at the buzzer. Nelson needed just an extra second or two. She came close as you can be to a takedown without getting it. With the loss, Maya Nelson finishes fifth.  At 68kg, Czeck Republic's Adela Hanzlickova, a 2016 Olympian and 2019 Senior European Championships silver medalist, had a tall task in front of her, taking on the 2020 Olympic god medal Tamyra Mensah-Stock for a bronze medal.  While Hanzlickova got the match's first point (a step-out), it was all Tamyra after that. The American converted on five shot attempts to get the 10-1 decision – and a 2021 World bronze medal.
