Minnesota Lands Gavin Nelson, TOM's No. 2 at 220 Pounds in the Class of 2023

The recruiting process is moving along, and big things are happening for Brandon Eggum and the Minnesota Golden Gophers wrestling program.

After already securing a verbal commitment from TOM's top Class of 2023 prospect, Cody Chittum, earlier in June, the Gophers recently added a second top-5 recruit from that same recruiting class, Gavin Nelson, TOM's No. 2 at 220 in the latest class rankings.

With its latest addition, Minnesota is out to an early lead in the recruiting race for Class of 2023 prospects, now having garnered two top-5 prospects in less than three weeks.

Nelson, a Smiley, Minnesota native, is stringing together some of his best wrestling in recent weeks.

In April, Nelson earned gold at the Cadet World Team Trials in freestyle. He went 5-0 and outscored his opponents 53-1, many of whom were equally talented and highly-regarded high school prospects in their own right.

Most recently, Nelson picked up right where he left off last week when competing for the Minnesota Blue squad at Junior Duals in both freestyle and Greco. In freestyle, Nelson was 7-0 with six technical falls. In Greco, the future Gopher was even more dominant, finishing 6-0 with a technical fall each time out.

He was also a 2021 state champion at Smiley Senior High School this past season.

Nelson, a 2021 Cadet World Team member, projects as a 197-pounder at the next level. He and Chittum are enormous gets for the Gophers and the Big Ten.

An accomplished multisport athlete, Nelson comes into the 2021-2022 season ranked as TOM's No. 2 at 220 pounds and No. 8 overall on the TOM 2023 Big Board.
