A Throwback Story: 'The Perfect Match: The Midlands and The Marines'

In honor of Memorial Day, I decided to re-share a story that I wrote for Northwestern Athletics during my time as a graduate student and wrestling reporter at the Medill School of Journalism.

The story, particularly relevant on a day like today, expresses how and why the United States Marine Corps became the title sponsor of the annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in 2019.

Often, there is a deep affinity for the sport of wrestling among current and former Marines (and other members of the military) for how our beloved sport has prepared them for their respective careers in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. Each institution also boosts an elite wrestling program in its own right.

With that, a very happy Memorial Day to all.

Additionally, a special thank you to every current and former member of our military who has bravely fought for the United States of America both at home and abroad.
