Action will resume tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. CST and run through the finals, with the ten weight class champions earning the right to represent the U.S. in Belgrade, Serbia this November. At 57 kg, Taylor LaMont’s hopes of earning World Team spots in Greco-Roman and men’s freestyle are still alive. LaMont earned the 55 kg Greco-Roman World Team spot yesterday. In tomorrow’s semifinals, he will take on Princeton freshman Nick Kayal. On the other side of the bracket, Princeton All-American Pat Glory and Jace Koelzer, who downed 2018 Cadet World Champion Matt Ramos, 5-0, in his quarterfinal, will battle it out for a spot in the finals. Jesse Mendez, a high school Junior who made the 2021 Junior World Team, is still in the hunt for his second World Team spot this year. Mendez has looked fantastic, outscoring his opponents 40-0 in four matches. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Patrick McKee, who finished third at the 2021 NCAA Tournament for Minnesota, 10-0. He will face Iowa sophomore Cullan Schriever in the semifinals. In the top half of the bracket, 2020 Senior Nationals finalist Dylan Ragusin and 2021 NCAA All-American Chris Cannon of Northwestern will square off. Four-time age-group World Team member Dom Demas rolled through the top half of the bracket at 65 kg. In the semifinals he’ll face Sammy Alvarez, a 2020 NWCA Second-Team All-American for Rutgers. In the lower half of the bracket, Lawrence Saenz continued his impressive tournament, picking up two technical falls after downing Allan Hart and Chad Red in this morning’s session. Northwestern freshman Justin Benjamin will challenge Saenz in the semifinals. Benjamin bumped off South Dakota State All-American Clay Carlson in the round of 16, 6-5. 70 kg has some of the most credentialed semifinals matchups in the tournament, featuring four All-Americans and three age group World Team members. In the top half of the bracket, 2019 Junior World Team member and 2021 NCAA third-place finisher Yahya Thomas of Northwestern will face two-time All-American Brock Mauller of Missouri. The other semifinal features 2017 Cadet World bronze medalist and 2021 NCAA fourth-place finisher Jacori Teemer of Arizona State and 2019 Junior World Team member and 2021 NCAA sixth-place finisher Brayton Lee of Minnesota. At 74 kg, Ivy League rivals Quincy Monday, a 2020 First-Team NWCA All-American for Princeton, and 2020 NCAA qualifier Philip Conigliaro of Harvard will wrestle in tomorrow morning’s semifinals. The other 74 kg semifinal features two-time NCAA qualifier Peyton Robb of Nebraska and Oklahoma State’s Jalin Harper, who knocked off two-time NCAA qualifier and 2019 Junior Pan Am champion Danny Braunagel in the semifinals, 7-4. In a rematch of the 2020 UWW Junior finals, Michael O’Malley, a two-time NCAA qualifier for Drexel, and Iowa freshman Patrick Kennedy will square off once again. Last time around, O’Malley pinned Kennedy in a first-period headlock. In the bracket’s other half, Nebraska’s two-time All-American Michael Labriola will take on Indiana’s Donnell Washington, who claimed a spot on the 2021 Junior World Team earlier this year. At 86 kg, Rutgers’s freshman All-American John Poznanski will clash with the Spartan Combat RTC’s Chris Foca, who will be a freshman at Cornell next season. In the other semifinal, the PRTC’s Maximus Hale, who scored a come-from-behind fall over Jack Jessen in the quarterfinals, and the Hawkeye Wrestling Club’s Myles Wilson will square off. 92 kg is another deep class featuring some of the tournament’s premier semifinals. 2021 NCAA finalist Nino Bonaccorsi of Pittsburgh will take on 2019 Greco-Roman Junior World Team member and 2018 Junior Pan Am champion Cam Caffey, a three-time NCAA qualifier for Michigan State. On the other side of the bracket, returning U23 Nationals champion and 2021 All-American for Oklahoma Jakob Woodley faces off with Missouri freshman All-American Rocky Elam. Three-time NCAA qualifier Jay Aiello of Virginia seems to be the favorite at 97 kg, but he could see stiff competition from Nebraska’s Cale Davidson, who compiled a 16-1 record competing primarily in open tournaments the past two NCAA seasons. Stanford freshman Peter Ming and Buffalo freshman Sam Mitchell will wrestle on the other side of the bracket. 125 kg is another weight class filled with elite semifinal matchups. 2019 Junior World silver medalist Lucas Davison will battle with 2018 Cadet Greco-Roman World Team member Luke Luffman in the top half of the bracket. In the bottom half, Lehigh All-American and 2014 Cadet World silver medalist and 2016 Junior World Team member Jordan Wood will see Anthony Cassioppi, a 2021 NCAA third-place finisher and two-time Junior Pan Am champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.
