Bristol, Tennessee has become a landing spot for some of the best female wrestlers in the country. On Wednesday, May 12, the Tornado room got better as the King University program picked up a pledge from one of the best in the nation, Sage Mortimer, who shared via Instagram that she's headed to King University next season.
"Excited to announce that I’ve chosen to further my education and wrestling career at King University. Looking forward to this opportunity and new chapter in my life. So grateful for coaches, family, training partners and supporters who helped me get here. See you soon Tennessee."
Mortimer will come to Bristol with a lengthy resume of achievements on the mat. Mortimer's list of accolades include:
Cadet world teamer in 2019
Gold medalist at the Pan-American Championships (U15 division) in 2016
A two-time Fargo 16U champ
A two-time Junior Fargo finalist and one-time champ
In March, Mortimer won at the the Last Chance Qualifier to earn the right to compete at the Olympic Team Trials in Fort Worth, Texas this past April as a high schooler.
Mortimer, along with numerous other highly regarded Tornado signees will add some depth to an already very deep King University room, one that finished in second place behind McKendree at the 2021 NCWWs.
King also had a strong showing at the Women's National Championships in Irving, Texas this past weekend. The Tornado had three placers on Friday in the Junior National Championships and eight on Sunday at the U23 National Championships. Ashlynn Ortega was voted Outstanding Wrestler with a first place finish and World Team qualification Cheyenne Sisenstein also qualified for the World Team with a first place finish.
