Bo Bassett Brings Home USA Wrestler of the Week Honors
Photo credit: San Janicki (SJanickiPhoto.com) If we look back at the marquee wrestling events we have seen over the last two months, including NCAAs, Olympic Team Trials, UWW Cadet and U15 Nationals, and others, it's apparent a youth movement is in progress. Younger athletes are starting to see success on the biggest of stages. At NCAAs, Carter Starocci and AJ Ferrari were freshman national champs. At Olympic Team Trials, we saw high schoolers Kennedy Blades and Kylie Welker made it to the Team Trials finals as high school juniors. Bo Bassett has been utterly dominant at the Cadet level and the phenom has justified his lofty billing as the next Spencer Lee. Earlier this month, Bassett put together quite the showing at Cadet Nationals, securing spots on both the Greco-Roman and men's freestyle Cadet World Teams at 45 kg/99 lbs. As such, the 14-year-old was chosen as USA Wrestling's most recent Wrestler of the Week. Official release courtesy of USA Wrestling. Bo Bassett (Pennsylvania/Young Guns WC) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on April 27, 2021. At the Cadet Nationals in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., Bassett put together a great weekend securing spots on both the Greco-Roman and men’s freestyle Cadet World Teams at 45 kg/99 lbs. In the Greco-Roman division, Bassett teched his way to the best-of-three finals. There, he defeated Mack Mauger of Idaho with two-straight wins, including a fall and an 11-2 technical fall. To make the freestyle team, he performed just as well, winning his all three of his challenge tournament wins by technical fall. In the best-of-three championships series, he met up with Mauger again. Bassett won the first bout, 10-0, followed by a first-period fall in the second match to make his second World Team of the weekend. Bassett will represent the USA at the 2021 Cadet World Championships July 19-25 in Budapest, Hungary. Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision. To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
