'Dr. Kemerer' Returning to Iowa for Year Number Seven
Hawkeye wrestling fans finally have the long-awaited answer they were searching for regarding their veteran four-time All-America upperweight, Michael Kemerer. Regarding whether he would be wrestling in Iowa City next season: Dr. Michael Kemerer is coming back. Ok, Kemerer isn't actually a doctor, nor is he studying to be one. Still, Wednesday evening, April 7, Iowa's NCAA 174-pound runner-up announced, via a comical Twitter video, that he would be suiting up for the Hawkeyes in the 2021-22 season – his seventh year. https://twitter.com/Kem_Daughg65/status/1379953123255590914 The Murrysville, Pennsylvania, native is in his seventh season in a Hawkeye singlet after being redshirted in 2015-16, receiving a medical redshirt in 2018-19, and now receiving an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tom Brands' 2021 NCAA Championship squad will return all its starters next season as the Hawks look to defend their first team title since 2010. Kemerer has placed at the NCAA Championships on three occasions and was named an All-American following the 2020 season. Despite having an accomplished career, Kemerer brought home just his first Big Ten championship in 2021 and did not lose until the NCAA finals. After five years of competition, Kemerer has amassed an 86-8 record for the Hawkeyes and has never finished lower than fourth at the NCAA Championships.
