The Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic is one of the most challenging all-star events in high school wrestling. It routinely features NCAA national champs and All-Americans. As such, the event is affectionately known as the Rose Bowl of wrestling. The 47th iteration of the event, which took place Friday, April 2nd, at Hilton Garden Inn – Southpointe in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, certainly lived up to this lofty billing.
It was a clean sweep for Pennsylvania. The Keystone State wrestlers won both team duals and the individual women's match as well.
During the undercard, Team WPIAL demolished Team Maryland, taking ten of the 12 individual bouts, winning 41-6.
In the marquee women's matchup, No. 2 Montana DeLawder (Gettysburg, PA) dominated the No. 1 Adrienna Turner (Davis, CA) through the first three minutes of the match before ultimately winning by fall.
In the main event, Team Pennsylvania narrowly edged out Team USA, 27-23, in a dual that came down to the final match of the dual. With that, Team Pennsylvania earned its first win against Team USA since the 2011 Classic. Team Pennsylvania won six of the 12 individual bouts.
Team Pennsylvania's impressive dual meet win was a product of three upset wins, bonus-point decisions, and, regrettably, an injury default by Georgetown Prep's Kyonte Hamilton. the big man out of Maryland fell to Hempfield's Isiah Vance in the Team WPIAL vs. Team Maryland dual.
As a result, Hamilton was unable to wrestle in his second scheduled matchup of the day against Selinsgrove's Nate Schon of Team Pennsylvania. Schon received a forfeit victory by injury default.
No.1's Go Down
At 120 pounds, Norte Dame-Green Pond's Brett Ungar took out the nation's No. 1 in Richard Figueroa by way of a 5-2 decision. With that, Ungar ends his prep career by taking out three opponents ranked within the nation's top-10. He defeated Gary Steen of Reynolds and Mason Gibson of Bishop McCort during the PIAA postseason. Ungar took home gold at the PIAA state meet last month as well. The future Cornell lightweight, who was ranked No. 4 nationally before the upset, could not have asked for a better end to his high school career.
At 152 pounds, future Oklahoma Sooner middleweight and three-time PIAA champ Alejandro Herrera-Rodon, got a signature win against Victor Voinovich, a two-time OHSAA champ and the nation's top 152-pounder out of Brecksville High School in Ohio. Herrera-Rondon won 6-4. Fans might see this pairing frequently over the next few seasons during their respective college careers as the Bedlam rivalry unfolds. Voinovich has committed to wrestling for John Smith and the Oklahoma State Cowboys, while Herrera-Rondon will suit join Lou Rosselli and the Oklahoma Sooners next year.
In the marquee women's matchup, which saw the best two in the nation at 127 pounds square off, No. 2 Montana DeLawder (Gettysburg, PA) dominated the No. 1 Adrienna Turner (Davis, CA), ultimately winning by fall. DeLawder got a quick takedown, and Turner never recovered. DeLawder rode Turner out in the first. DeLawder chose the top position to start the second and was able to turn the California native for the pin midway through the second. With the win, DeLawder avenged an earlier loss to Turner from this year.
