Welcome Christopher Miller to The Open Mat

The Open Mat is pleased to announce the addition of Christopher Miller to the staff at TOM as our next Editor.

“I am excited for the opportunity to be joining the team at The Open Mat as the next Editor,” Miller said. “TOM is already a nationally-respected news resource for college, high school, and international wrestling. I look to continue this tradition and carry on the great work that Earl [Smith] has done over the years.”

In terms of his background, Miller is from Western Pennsylvania as he was born in Monroeville and raised in Penn Township, Westmoreland County, but attended Shady Side Academy. From there, Christopher basically became what he calls a professional student from 2013 to 2020. First, he earned both bachelor degrees in journalism and sports management from Ohio University in 2017. Then, he earned his first master’s degree in sports business from NYU in 2019, and a second master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern in 2020.

At each university, Miller covered the school teams for various university publications and other local outlets. Also, he has spent time in media relations at Ohio, Pitt, NYU and Northwestern. Miller has collegiate and freelance experience covering multiple sports, including, wrestling.

With regard to his work in wrestling in particular, Miller has been at InterMat as a freelancer since 2019. Most recently, Miller was on staff at Pittsburgh Sports Now as a wrestling reporter. At PSN, Miller’s focus was on Pitt wrestling and high school wrestling along with covering the West Virginia University wrestling team for PSN’s brother site, West Virginia Sports Now.

Miller is currently based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“In addition to continuing our national coverage of wrestling at all levels to the best of our abilities, I hope to increase coverage and awareness around women’s wrestling, one of the fastest growing sports in the country,” Miller said.
