This week’s College Wrestler of the Week is Minnesota’s 184 lber Owen Webster. Owen entered the weekend ranked #27 in the nation at 184 lbs. On Sunday, Webster logged a pair of wins over two of the country’s top-14 wrestlers and helped lead the Gophers to a 2-0 record. In the day’s first dual, Webster saw seven of his teammates preceding him in the lineup get their hand raised, which staked Minnesota to a 24-0 lead over #17 Purdue. Owen’s opponent was #11 Max Lyon, a foe who had split matches with Webster over the past two years. Lyon struck first with a takedown late in the opening stanza; however, Webster was able to escape with ten seconds remaining in the period. The Gopher then countered with a takedown of his own off an ankle pick in the second. With the bout knotted at four points in the third, Webster defended Lyon’s attack and spun for the go-ahead takedown. The final score would read, 6-5.

In the second match of the day, Webster was pair with Rutgers’ true freshman John Poznanski, who was undefeated and ranked 14th in the nation. Owen struck first with a takedown off of a low attack in the first period. Once again, Webster found himself in a tie bout late in the third period. This time, Owen was on the offensive and built up to a body lock after a shot attempt. Webster stopped the freshman from hipping over and collected the winning takedown in a 6-4 match. With his two wins on the day, the Gopher freshman improved his record to 3-2 on the year.

Congratulations to Owen Webster, TOM’s College Wrestler of the Week.
